Many Voices -- Stalking Resources
RESOURCES TO ASSIST STUDENTS WITH
SITUATIONS OF STALKING AND HARASSMENT
If a student is being stalked or harassed, what kinds of resources are available
on the Augsburg campus for support?
CAMPUS SECURITY
Students are encouraged to contact Campus Security at ext. 1717 to report
harassing behaviors. Dispatch workers will have a Security Officer contact
the student to take a report.
Security will assess the following factors in determining what action(s)
to take:
- Safety of the individual, including whether the student has a safe place
to go on or off campus.
- Threat assessment.
- Frequency of contact; most recent contact.
- Alleged harasser: is he/she another student?
- Reporting
- We will do our best to honor a students desire to keep the matter
confidential. However, Security will inform the student that a report
will be filed with the Director of Security/Associate Dean for Student
Affairs.
- Depending on the threat assessment, we may involve police with or
without the students consent.
- Psychologists in CCHP and Campus Pastors are not held to the same
reporting requirement. These individuals will NOT report sexual assaults
without a signed student release.
- Follow up with the student.
- Security and the Associate Dean for Student Affairs will follow up
with student, including referrals to on- and off-campus support.
- Discipline system
- If the alleged harasser is a student, he/she can be subject to Augsburg
discipline system. The Associate Dean for Student Affairs will work
with the student to determine what actions he/she feels are appropriate
and are supported by college policy.
- Confidentiality
- Unless there is a threat to the physical safety of others on campus,
we will do our best to respect the students wish for confidentiality.
- We may involve police with or without the students consent,
depending on the level of threat to the individual or the campus community.
ASSOCIATE DEAN FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS
The Associate Dean will work with the student to see what actions should
be taken to:
- See to the safety of the student.
- Address the harassing behaviors.
COUNSELING
Free, confidential counseling by licensed psychologists is available through
the Center for Counseling & Health Promotion (call x1707). Counselors
work proactively with the student to help her/him:
- Identify a safety plan.
- Become aware of resources for support on and off campus (e.g., Security,
Aurora Center, support groups, Hennepin County resources for getting an
order for protection)
- Regain a sense of personal power and understand that the stalking or
harassment is not their fault.
- Identify possible mental health issues that may be related to being a
victim of stalking or harassment (e.g., anxiety, panic attacks, insomnia,
post-traumatic stress, depression). The counselor may make a referral to
a medical professional if the student chooses to seek support through medication
options.
- Tell her/his story and name her/his own experience.
- Identify and develop appropriate coping behaviors.
- Develop a network of support from family and friends.
Counseling through CCHP is confidential ethically and legally the
psychologists at CCHP cannot share any client information with anyone outside
the counseling center without the written permission of the student (except
in specific circumstances as defined by law). Students are not hospitalized
against their will, except in the extreme circumstance that they are indicating
they are at imminent risk of significantly harming themselves or someone else,
and are unable to give assurance of follow through on a plan to keep from
attempting this harm.
